As Dungeon Masters, we often try to take inspiration from other sources; this can be from sources like our favorite video games, novels, and TV series, but it could also come from history! Ancient Rome has served as the backdrop or creative fount for thousands of pieces of media, including hundreds of D&D campaigns.

Monsters inspired by Ancient Rome could be just the thing for a fun one shot, or to include in a longer campaign that takes a trek through the capitol city of an empire. Either way, we thought we'd find some Ancient Roman myths that would fit into Dungeons and Dragons, then put them into WorldSmith's powerful monster generator to get a full statblock, description, loot, and more.

No. 1: The Coliseum Hound

Inspired by ancient Roman gladiators fighting wild beasts, the Coliseum Hound is a medium beast bred specifically by powerful Roman politicians to provide a viewing pleasure to the masses. Physically, the hound features a lean frame with rippling muscles beneath taut skin, short steel-gray fur with black stripes, and glowing amber eyes.

These creatures are trained from whelps to hunt and kill, learning to work in packs to tear foes apart under the roar of the crowd. They are also used for executions of high-value prisoners, pitting them against desperate captives. As an unaligned beast, each Coliseum Hound seeks only to please its master with violence, driven by a relentless hunger and trained to ignore mercy.

The Coliseum Hound could be easily inserted into any campaign featuring a Coliseum type structure, gladiator arenas, or sadistic leaders with crowds to please.

  • The multiattack action allows the monster to make two attacks on its turn, utilizing one bite and one claw strike.

  • Running leap dictates that if the hound moves at least 20 feet straight toward a creature and hits it with a bite attack on the same turn, the target must succeed on a strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

No. 2: Cynocephali Mercenary

Inspired by Roman naturalists' accounts of dog-headed warriors, the Cynocephali Mercenary is a medium monstrosity characterized by a doglike head atop a humanoid body. Clad in battered chain shirts and leather, their fur varies from tawny brown to dark sable, and their yellow eyes gleam with cold calculation.

They are said to hail from a ghostly hinterland and now work as lawful evil mercenaries for unscrupulous warlords. They are organized into small stalking bands, following a predetermined quarry for days or weeks, and striking only when the advantage is absolute.

The Cynocephali Mercenary could be easily inserted into any campaign featuring ancient ruins, desert warlords, or tracking sequences where the party is the prey.

  • Its multiattack allows it to make two trident attacks and one net thrown attack.

  • The net thrown attack restrains the target on a hit, requiring the trapped creature to use an action to make a strength check to escape, or requiring an ally to deal 5 slashing damage to the net to destroy it.

  • The trident can be used as a versatile melee weapon or a thrown ranged weapon, dealing piercing damage upon a successful hit.

No. 3: Strige

Inspired by Roman myths of terrifying birds of ill omen, the Strige is a medium beast taking the form of a grotesque owl larger than a hunter's hound, with mottled charcoal and midnight blue feathers. Their eyes burn with a cold red glow, and their beaks and talons are unnaturally sharp.

In flight, they move with eerie silence, as though shadows congeal and swirl in their wake, beating their wings in a near-invisible rhythm. Legends state the Striges were born from the spilled blood of fallen moon goddesses, twisted by hunger into monstrous predators of the night. Functioning as chaotic neutral creatures, they haunt ruined keeps and ancient forests, driven by a primal need to feed on rich blood.

  • Movement speed of 30 feet, flying speed of 60 feet, and climb speed of 30 feet

  • Keen sight provides advantage on wisdom perception checks that rely on sight, bolstering its passive perception.

  • Its multiattack allows it to strike once with its bite and once with its claw.

  • The latch ability triggers when the Strige hits a creature with its bite attack, instantly grappling the target.

  • While latched, the beast deals 1d6 necrotic damage at the start of each of its turns until the creature uses an action to succeed on a strength athletics or dexterity acrobatics check to escape.

No. 4: Cacus Brute

Inspired by the Roman myth of the fire-breathing giant Cacus, the Cacus Brute is a huge giant standing over 18 feet tall, composed of smoldering flesh and molten veins. Its muscular arms end in soot-blackened fists, and faint ember-like cracks run along its skin, pulsing with inner heat.

When it bellows, sulfurous smoke pours from its gaping maw before it unleashes flame upon its foes. According to legend, the first Cacus Brute emerged from a mountain cave wreathed in perpetual fire. These chaotic evil giants now roam ruinous battlefields, drawn to destruction, where they claim dens of blackened stone and hoard pillars and boulders to hurl at adventurers. They delight in sowing chaos, fueling their inner inferno with the terror they inspire.

The Cacus Brute could be easily inserted into any campaign featuring volcanic landscapes, ruined cities, or elemental chaos.

  • Armor Class 16

  • 195 hit points

  • Movement speed of 40 feet

Abilities:

  • The smoke veil ability renders the giant completely immune to the blinded and poisoned conditions while it remains within its own smoke cloud.

Inspired by the cults of deified Roman leaders, The Deified Emperor is a huge humanoid standing nearly twenty feet tall. His chiseled visage bears the stoic features of a once-mortal ruler named Aurelius Regulus, with eyes aglow with an inner light. Veins of bronze inlay trace a stylized laurel wreath on his brow, and he wields a colossal fasces, a bundle of petrified rods topped with a razor-edged axe head.

When he moves, the stone groans like the march of a thousand legionaries. The Deified Emperor was fashioned centuries ago by an underground cabal infused with ritual magic, bound to a marble effigy in a ruined forum. He awakens whenever a city teeters on the brink of anarchy, striding forth as a lawful evil force to impose absolute order, driven by an unwavering conviction that all must bow to imperial law.

The Deified Emperor could be easily inserted into any campaign featuring ancient empires, animated statues, or politically unstable cities.
